Ayşe, Ali, Mehmet and Zeynep are middle-class millennials struggling to make ends meet in Istanbul. Either still living with their parents or hardly getting by without help from their families, they are all beset by similar woes: money crunch, joblessness, social isolation. In view of the world’s horrors that Zeynep enumerates in her diary entries, these are minor problems, ‘slight disasters’, but they are all-consuming, at least to the extent of making them cry in the still of the night. 　　However, Umut Subasi’s first feature, Almost Entirely a Slight Disaster, is not a melodrama. With an appealingly light touch, it diagnoses the malaise of a generation that has run up against a dead end, one whose future prospects are indistinguishable from a game of chance. This is a world where astrology, the lottery and online personality tests compete with visa and job applications as life-shaping elements. 　　Fittingly, the film is structured around chance and coincidence, with its handful of characters encountering each other in every permutation, as though there were no world outside this small social bubble.  改编自赛珍珠的普立兹奖小说，是好莱坞在三十年代开始注意东方题材的代表性作品。影片虽是描写中国农村夫妇的悲剧故事，但主角均由美国人扮演，导演悉尼．弗兰克林也采取西方古典电影的风格来处理，在制作上相当严谨认真。剧情描写保罗．茂尼与路易丝．莱娜本来是贫困的农民，面对饥荒的威胁甚至以烤土充饥。后来茂尼得到了一笔财富，竟整天花天酒地迷恋情妇，莱娜只有发挥贤妻的耐性期待丈夫浪子回头。今天看来类似故事已显得老套，但本片的拍摄与特技表现杰出，路易丝．莱娜亦获得奥斯卡最佳女主角奖。

警长索恩：贪睡鬼
