　　1940年9月，德、意、日三国成立同盟。山本五十六被任命为日本联合舰队总司令，并不得不“违背自己的意愿”，接受命令对美、英、荷等国开战。1941后12月8日零时，山本五十六亲自下达了“1280”密码命令，并亲自率领部队偷袭美国珍珠港，从而对美军太平洋舰队造成重创，大胜而归。随后山本五十六建议与美国讲和，但意见未被采纳。在指挥中途岛战役时，由于战略上的重大失误，日本海军遭受惨重损失。形势陡然逆转，美军攻势如虹，日军兵败如山倒。瓜达康纳岛上有三万多名日本陆军，他们遭到了美军飞机的昼夜轰炸，陷于绝境。山本五十六派出舰队炮击美军基地，协助尚存的陆军安全撤退。1943年4月18日，山本五十六为了鼓动前线部队的士气，乘坐一架轰炸机到前线视察。没想到日军的密码被美军窃取，美军派出空军机队将山本五十六的座机击落，一代军人山本五十六就此碎尸于太平洋上空。
